{"id":75,"date":"2014-01-25T11:56:34","date_gmt":"2014-01-25T11:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buildteam.com\/blog\/?p=75"},"modified":"2022-04-26T13:39:51","modified_gmt":"2022-04-26T13:39:51","slug":"keeping-your-extension-private","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.buildteam.com\/blog\/keeping-your-extension-private\/","title":{"rendered":"Keep Your Home Extension Snug &#038; Private"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When designing your new side return extension, give some thought to heating and privacy.\u00a0 There are many options for both issues &#8211; here are some:<\/p>\n<p><b>HEATING<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To keep the new extra space nice and snug, you will need to add additional heating to that area.\u00a0 Yes you can add traditional wall mounted radiators &#8211; there are some fantastic modern looking ones on the market now.\u00a0 Another option, if you have access to a chimney (or space for a twin wall flue) is a log-fired stove.\u00a0 But for a really snug feel, there&#8217;s nothing like underfloor heating.<\/p>\n<p>Underfloor heating provides an evenly balanced heat source for a kitchen extension. \u00a0The manner in which it is installed means that the water flowing around the floor is a reduced temperature to the rest of the house, meaning that the pipes in the floor distribute an evenly balanced heat, whilst the floor tiles remain warm, rather than hot under foot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_80\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buildteam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Build-Team-blog-photo2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80\" class=\"wp-image-80 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.buildteam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Build-Team-blog-photo2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Underfloor Heating Installed\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.buildteam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Build-Team-blog-photo2-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.buildteam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Build-Team-blog-photo2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-80\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Underfloor Heating Installed<\/p><\/div>\n<p><i><b>Benefits:<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Greater efficiency (manufacturers quote energy savings of around 20% compared to standard radiators)<\/li>\n<li>Space saving \u2013 no awkward radiators to obstruct the kitchen planning<\/li>\n<li>Evenly balanced heat<\/li>\n<li>Warm underfoot (kids love playing on a heated floor!)<\/li>\n<li>The floor slab acts as a retained heat source by virtue of the embedded insulation beneath. This means the room is often nice and warm in the morning, even after a cold wintery night.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>Considerations:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never, ever, think of installing an electric heat mat system \u2013 it will be very costly to run and will heat the tile, not the room. Good for bathrooms, dreadful for kitchen extensions.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the underfloor heating is installed on a separate zone \u2013 so that it can be independently controlled from the rest of the house.<\/li>\n<li>Underfloor heating works best with a tiled or natural stone floor. \u00a0It can also work with timber flooring, but as timber acts as a natural source of heat retention, it is advisable to select an engineered timber floor as opposed to a solid wood floor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>PRIVACY<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If one of the reasons you are deciding to build a side return extension is to let in more natural daylight, then you may want to consider how to balance that with privacy issues.\u00a0 If you are out of sight of your neighbours then you may decide not to bother with any window treatments at all.\u00a0 But even if are not overlooked, you still may choose some type of curtain or blinds to help control the indoor climate.\u00a0 Here are some new options to consider:<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Velux windows<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Many side return extensions have velux windows built in.\u00a0 Whatever your preference, there is a great selection of specially designed blinds that enable you to control your privacy and the amount of daylight your room receives.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_76\" style=\"width: 257px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buildteam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Velux-Blind.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76\" class=\"wp-image-76 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.buildteam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Velux-Blind-247x300.jpg\" alt=\"Velux Venetian Blind\" width=\"247\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.buildteam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Velux-Blind-247x300.jpg 247w, https:\/\/www.buildteam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Velux-Blind.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-76\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Velux Venetian Blind<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Venetian blinds &#8211;
